This is a 4-day, 3-night wilderness backpacking trip along 22 miles of the Appalachian Trail during Fall Break and the peak color season! We’ll start the A.T. at Dennis Cove, TN in the shadow of Roan Mountain and travel South for 4 days. We’ll be camping on the Elk River on day 3, so bring your fishing gear!

We’ll leave Huntsville AL at 6:00 AM on Sunday, stopping for breakfast on the way, arriving at the Mountain Harbour B&B around 1:00 PM. Our shuttle will pick us up and take us back to the trailhead to begin our adventure!

Sunday – Dennis Cove to Moreland Gap Shelter (5 Miles)
We’ll begin our hike at Dennis Cove and hike South passing through the Coon Den Falls area. Then it’s uphill on Big Nance Ridge, finally descending into the Moreland Gap Shelter area where we’ll camp overnight.

Monday – Slide Hollow Creek (8 Miles)
We begin by going directly east on the ridge of the White Rock Mountains. We’ll cross Laurel Fork Creek a couple of times, stopping for lunch when we find a spot we love! Finally, we’ll descend into the Slide Hllow Creek area where we’ll camp overnight..

Tuesday – Elk River Flats (3 Miles)
This will be a super short day! We’ll begin the day in camp with a time for solitude and reflection. Then we’ll break camp and start hiking. We’ll travel right by the Mountaineer Falls and Shelter area, then descend into Sugar Hollow and pick our camping spot right on the banks of the Elk River. If you’re into fishing, this will be a great day to get out the gear and catch something fresh to eat for dinner!

Wednesday – Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast (6 Miles)

We’ll hike out by the Jones Branch Creek and Falls, finally turning South along Little Pine Mountain. We’ll descend into the Bear Branch Creek area, cross a footbridge, and finish our hike at the Mountain Harbour B&B where we’ll take showers, and change clothes.

Then we’ll load up into our travel vehicles, get a well-deserved dinner at a local restaurant, then head for home!

We should arrive back in Huntsville, AL between 7:00 and 9:00 PM.
