Join us for an unforgettable week in Iceland, the land of fire and ice, on the Laugavegur Trail! This is easily the most famous and iconic trail in Iceland. National Geographic listed it as one of the Top 20 hikes in the world! It’s a 4-day trek across the Icelandic wilderness – polychrome mountains, lava fields, black sand deserts, geothermal springs, glaciers, lakes, icy river-crossings, grassy plains and forests. This trek really has it all – simply magnificent!
While hiking the 34 mile trek, we will experience four days worth of geothermal pools, rivers, lava fields, glaciers, canyons, and mountains; so many beautiful, colorful mountains. It is no wonder the Laugavegur is one of the most popular hikes in Iceland and attracts hikers from all over the globe.
One minute, you’re trekking across and glacier and the next minute, you’re warming yourself at a geothermal vent. At the backcountry huts, we’ll enjoy hot meals, hot or cold drinks, and and the comaraderie of fellow-hikers.
We’ll start in Landmannalaugar and hike south to North towards Þórsmörk because of the overall decrease in elevation.
The Laugavegur Trail
Day One: Travel to Reykjavik
This is our travel day flying into Iceland. Your flight will begin the day before and you’ll travel overnight arriving in the AM. We’ll stay at a hotel in Reykjavik (included) and enjoy touring the city, shopping, then a leisurely dinner at a local restaurant. We’ll have a trail briefing that evening at the hotel.
Meals: On Your own
Day Two: Landmannalaugar
To get to Landmannalaugar, we’ll take a bus out of Reykjavik, and the ride is only a few hours. The first night, we’ll camp at Landmannalaugar in the camping area. Camping is only allowed in designated areas around the huts that are located along the trail. Each hut has running water and there are many water sources along the trail, so there is no need to carry water for the entire day. Depending on time, we’ll do some day hikes in this area.
Meals provided: Lunch and Dinner

Day Three: Landmannalaugar – Hrafntinnusker (7.45 miles)
Elevation increase: 1,541 ft.
We’ll start our first day of hiking from Landmannalaugar. After breakfast, we will head to the trailhead. Most of this day is uphill as we climb to Hrafntinnusker. Along the way we will come across several geothermal hot springs. There will be views of surrounding mountains and we may experience snow cover as we gain elevation. After we reach Hrafntinnusker, there are several short day hikes we can take if time allows.
Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Geothermal Vents
Day Four: Hrafntinnusker – Álftavatn (7.45 miles)
Elevation decrease: 1,607 ft
Day two of hiking starts by walking across a ravine until we reach an area with a short climb. Here we will see a spectacular panoramic view of colorful mountains. This is the highest elevation for the hike. Next we will walk along a ridge until we reach another panoramic view of a green valley. The trail now descends quickly into this valley towards a lake where Álftavatn Hut lies. This section is very steep with a lot of switchbacks. Once down in the valley, the trail flattens as we walk the final stretch to Álftavatn.
Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day Five: Álftavatn – Emstrur (9.3 miles)
Elevation decrease: 40 m (131 ft)
Today does not have as much elevation change, but that does not mean a lack in scenery. From the camp, we wade through a small river and continue hiking through the valley. After about 3 miles we come to Hvanngil Hut. After passing Hvanngil, we cross a bridge and come to a point in the trail where it splits. Then the trail leads through several lava fields where we will walk across black sand and lava rocks. We’ll continue following the trail along a road until it splits and follow the signs towards the Emstrur Hut. Once arriving, we’ll see more vegetation.
Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Panoramic Views of Mountain Ranges
Day Six: Emstrur (Botnar) – Þórsmörk (9.3 miles)
Elevation decrease: 984 ft.
For the final day, we start by walking towards a canyon with a fast moving river. There is a steep descent down to a bridge where we can cross the river. The trail follows this river along the edge of the canyon where we will get views of the river below and surrounding mountains.
Towards the end of the day there is another river that needs to be crossed. This is a broad, black rock river, fairly shallow, with lots of options. You’re feet will get wet though The last short section of the trail continues through a small forest towards the huts in Þórsmörk.
Once arriving in Þórsmörk, we’ll take a leisurely stroll through an enchanted forest to a tiny cafe for drinks and lunch (on your own) celebrating the end of our trail journey!
From there, we’ll catch a bus back to Reykjavik and stay overnight at a hotel (included.)
Meals provided: Breakfast (Lunch and Dinner are on your own.)
