 Camino de Santiago (The French Way)

Join me for an epic pilgrimage on the most popular final stage of the Camino de Santiago, the Sarria to Santiago section!

We’ll journey for 5 days covering the last 100km (60 miles) of the Camino Frances route, otherwise known as the French Way. As Camino Pilgrims, we’ll walk through rural Galicia, passing landmarks like the market town of Arzúa and the Monte do Gozo (Mount of Joy), before reaching the city of Santiago de Compostela and its famous Cathedral. We’ll finish our pilgrimage at the traditional end point, the Praza do Obradoiro, where we’ll collect our ‘Compostela’ certificate (Certificate of Completion) from the Pilgrim’s Office.

Our adventure begins as we fly into the airport at Madrid, Spain. From there well transfer to the train station for a 4-hour “bullet train” ride to Sarria, Spain, the starting point of our pilgrimage. Each day we’ll travel light, walking from village to village, with all of our luggage being transferred ahead of us waiting to greet us at our evening accommodations at the end of our day.

DAILY ITINERARY:

Day 1: MADRID to SARRIA, SPAIN

Our adventure begins at the Madrid airport where our bus transfer will take us to a bullet train that will whisk us to Sarria, Spain, a town in Galicia that is considered the gateway to the final 100km of the Camino Frances. (The French Way) Our transfer will take us to our hotel in Sarria in time to enjoy our first evening meal, and get a good rest before we begin our Camino. If you have energy to burn, you can visit the town’s main religious sites, Convento de la Magdalena and Iglesia Santa Marina de Sarria.

Day 2: SARRIA to PORTOMARIN – 14 miles

Today we can expect a peaceful walk in shady oak woods and pretty villages on quiet country roads. The village of Barbadelo has a beautiful Romanesque church that is worth a visit. The next significant village is Ferreiros. When we arrive in Portomarin we can relax on one of the numerous terraces of the town’s main plaza. Then we’ll enjoy a delightful dinner before turning in for the night. Our luggage will be transferred and waiting for us at our evening accommodations.

Day 3: PORTOMARIN to PALAS DE REI – 15 miles

From the village, the Camino crosses the river Minho and climbs uphill. On our way, we’ll be crossing Gonzar and passing the Romanesque Church of Santa María, Castromaior. The calm of the Galician Cemetery in Ligonde on a sunny day is a rest in itself. In Eirexe, the Romanesque portal of the church is a beauty, featuring a sculpture of Daniel, as well as a statue of Santiago de Peregrino. We will then arrive in Palas de Rei, enjoy a relaxing dinner together and overnight there. 

Day 4: PALAS DE REI  to ARZUA – 18 miles

Today, the Camino continues slightly downhill, passing the village of Casanova and the charming village of Leboreiro. At Melide, we’ll stop in one of the many restaurants to try some local specialities. Later today, the Camino will follow a forest track and cross several streams bringing us to the village of Boente. Then, we’ll encounter the mediaeval village of Ribadiso, and finally Arzua. This small town has two churches that we can visit, Santa María and La Magdalena. After a long day, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved dinner before collapsing into bed!

Day 5: ARZUA  to RUA – 11 miles

Today, we’ll experience a shaded section of the Camino that will pass through woods, along streams, and through sleepy villages. We’ll take our time and visit the chapel of Santa Irena, with its unique statues of Santiago. We’ll get lunch at one of the villages along the way. The rest of the way to Rua-O Pino is on a quiet country road. Rua is one of the less crowded stopping points before Santiago de Compostela, where we’ll enjoy dinner and overnight accommodations.

Day 6: RUA  to SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – 13 miles

We’re nearly there! The next stage will be Lavacolla, where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river before reaching Santiago de Compostela. Tall eucalyptus trees line our way to Monte del Gozo, or Mount of Joy. From here, we can see our goal – the Cathedral of Santiago! After a descent to the city we’ll be able to witness this UNESCO World Heritage Site up-close. We’ll finish our Camino at the traditional end point,Praza do Obradoiro, where we’ll collect our ‘Compostela’ certificate (Certificate of Completion) from the Pilgrim’s Office. We’ll marvel at the architecture and relish the wonderful atmosphere in this cultural and spiritual mecca, and contemplate all we’ve experienced on our amazing journey. We’ll have our final dinner together, sharing highs and lows from our adventure, before turning in for our final night in Spain.

Day 7: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

After a yummy breakfast, our transfer will take us to the Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ) where we’ll head for home with our certificate of completion and memories that will last a lifetime!
