THE BRIEFING:

This is a 3-day, 2-night wilderness backpacking trip along 21 miles of the Appalachian Trail. We’ll start on the Appalachian Trail at Yellow Creek and travel south for 3 days finishing at the beautiful Nantahala River.

THE MISSION:

We’ll leave Huntsville AL at 5:00 AM on Friday, stopping for breakfast on the way, arriving at the NOC around noon. Our shuttle will pick us up and take us back to the trailhead to begin our adventure!

Friday – Yellow Creek Gap to Brown Fork Shelter (5 Miles)

We’ll start this adventure with a bang! We have several uphills today, starting with an ascent out of Yellow Creek Gap. We then go downhill to Cody Gap, followed by another ascent, then a downhill to Hogback Gap. After a final push we’ll finish our day at the Brown Fork Shelter camping area where we’ll camp overnight.  The camping area and water source are to the right of the shelter and below.

Saturday – Brown Fork Gap to Cheoah Bald (8 miles)

Leaving Brown Fork, we go straight up 2 inclines, then downhill to Sweetwater Gap. Another mile to Stecoah Gap. where there is water. Then a 2 more inclines until you reach Locust Grove Gap. Get all your water there (down and to the right). There is NO water source at our camping area! Then we head 2.4 miles uphill to Cheoah Bald where we’ll camp for the night.

Sunday – Cheoah Bald  to Nantahala Outdoor Center (8 miles)

Our final day is basically downhill all the way to the Nantahala River and the Nantahala Outdoor Center! The drivers will go back for the vehicles while everyone else enjoys showers at the NOC, just across the street from the outfitter. We’ll get a well-deserved dinner at a local restaurant on our way home.

We should arrive back in Huntsville, AL between 7:00 and 9:00 PM.
