Trail Description:

Day 1: We fly into San Francisco by noon on Saturday, September 19th. (Airfare not included.) We’ll leave the airport and head out for Gianelli’s Cabin trailhead (elev. 8,600 ft.) stopping for a bite to eat on the way. We’ll hit the trail around 6:30 PM and hike by the Burst Rock overlook, finishing a short 2.5 miles at Powell Lake (elev. 8,900 ft.) for our first night.

Day 2: We’ll hike 9.5 miles through pine forests and open meadows, finishing at Long Lake (elev. 8,700 ft.) for the night.

Day 3: We’ll hike 8.5 miles, past Deer Lake, then continuing on to the crystal clear waters of Lertora Lake, one of my favorite Sierra camping destinations. You have rock islands scattered throughout the lake, with the imposing views of Mount Bigelow to the East.¬†

Day 4: It’s a shorter day, hiking only 6.5 miles. But there’s a lot of elevation as we descend to Huckleberry Lake, pass through the Saches Monument gorge, visiting an old mine along the way. We then ascend almost 1,000 feet to the beautiful Maxwell Lake (elev. 8,700 ft.) where cliff jumping and swimming are highly encouraged!

Day 5: We’ll hike some 7.5 miles past Emigrant Lake where we’ll stop for lunch. Then it’s on the trail again with the final destination of Buck Lakes (elev. 8,300 ft.) where fantastic fishing can be found. Hopefully, we’ll add fresh trout to our dinner plans for the evening!

Day 6: We’ll begin retracing our steps, back to our starting trailhead. We’ll hike past Deer Lake and Long Lake, finishing a 9.5 mile day at the beautiful Y-Meadow Lake (elev. 8,800 ft.) where we’ll camp for the evening. Swimming and fishing are encouraged.

Day 7: It’s a 6 mile day back to the Gianelli trailhead, where we’ll drive back to San Francisco staying at one of the hotels (reservation not included) close to the airport. We’ll head into town that evening to enjoy the sights of downtown San Francisco and an amazing dinner where we’ll share our highs and lows from the trip.

Day 8: We fly back to our homes with friendships and memories that can only be forged over a week in the wilderness together!
