Mount Kilimanjaro at Sunrise
This hike is rated STRENUOUS
Join Born 2 Be Wild on a truly unforgettable trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro! Standing on the summit of the tallest mountain in Africa is one of the most sought after “bucket list” experiences for any mountain lover. This is a tremendous undertaking, and you will have a whole team of people behind you supporting you every step of the way. Our international partner, YOLO Dream Adventure Travel, makes sure we have the best guides to make your trip safe, fun, and successful.
Trekking to the highest peak in Africa is something you don’t take lightly. You’ll climb over 10,000 feet, reaching an altitude of 19,341 feet. This puts you into a zone of extreme altitude where you can be susceptible to altitude sickness if you aren’t properly acclimatized. This is why we are taking the 8-day Lemosho route on our trip, giving us many days of acclimation. The trek in Kilimanjaro National Park will take you through five distinct ecosystems giving you a new view to look forward to with every step you take. From lush jungle, to alpine desert, to rocky summit, this hike has it all!
One of the best things about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is it doesn’t require any technical climbing skills. Plus, your registration includes a porter who will be carrying all of your camping gear for you! This makes Kilimanjaro an attainable goal for just about anyone. You will need adequate physical training to have the stamina to make the trek, but it doesn’t require years of mountaineering experience. Standing atop one of the Seven Summits (highest summit on each continent) is an experience you’ll never forget!
Your registration includes:
A guided 8-day, 7 night trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro
Spiritual direction provided by Bruce W. Martin each day
Private transfers from / to Kilimanjaro International Airport

The Summit is in Sight!

The first part of our trek takes us through a tropical jungle paradise! Over the next 7 days we will travel through five different ecosystems!
Day 1: Check in at Chanya Lodge
Chanya Lodge is nestled on the outskirts of Moshi town, in Tanzania (East Africa), at the foothills of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The prime location of the lodge is a 50-minute drive away from Kilimanjaro International Airport, making it an ideal stay for trekkers, safari seekers, business people and families. Guests are warmly welcomed by the smiles of friendly, helpful staff and accommodated in one of 32 en-suite rooms. The lodge is known for its abundant green carpeted-grass gardens, multi-cuisine restaurant and its large swimming pool.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro Trek Begins – (6,890 ft.)
Upon arrival at the Londorosi Gate to complete park formalities, you will then be driven to the Lemosho starting point and begin your hike through the rain forest while enjoying watching wild animals and learning about the history and interesting facts about the area. You will arrive at Mti Mkumbwa Camp where you will camp for the night. (9,121 ft.)
Day 4: Shira One Camp
Continue through the forest, steeply climbing into the heather and moorland zone, crossing the Shira Ridge, and descending into the Shira Plateau. (11,483 ft.)
Day 5: Shira Two Camp
A slow-paced hike across the Shira Plateau through the heather and moorland. (12,795 ft.)
Day 6: Barranco Camp
Start your gentle ascent out of the heather and moorland zone, traversing southwest of Kilimanjaro passing through Lava Tower Camp (15,092′) where you will have a hot lunch and some time to rest. Later you will start your descent through Great Barranco Valley for your overnight stay at camp. Barranco camp is considered the most beautiful of all camps on Kilimanjaro. The hike to Lava Tower gives hikers the opportunity to experience higher altitude which aids in the acclimatization process. (15,092 ft.) You will then descend down to Barranco Camp and spend the night at a lower altitude. (12,992 ft.)
Day 7: Karanga Camp
This day is designed for acclimatization. Today you will conquer the Great Barranco Wall with the possibility for a view of Heim glacier on the top. The trail winds down to Karanga Valley. You will then finish the day with a steep climb to Karanga Camp. (13,238 ft.)
Day 8: Barafu Camp
Today your trek involves a steep climb where you may have a spectacular view of Kibo peak if the clouds allow. You will then proceed with your trek on empty and dry landscape to Barafu Camp. You will arrive at the camp early and have a good rest before your summit trek begins around midnight. The word “Barafu” means Ice, this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. (15,256 ft.)
Day 9: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (19,341 feet!)
Around midnight begins a steep climb over loose volcanic scree. Slow and steady pace will take you towards Stella Point (18,651′) where will take a short rest. Afterwards, we will continue with the ascent to Uhuru peak (19,341′). You will normally encounter snow on your way to the peak. We will spend a few minutes on the top of the mountain to capture your accomplishment and marvel the views from the highest point in Africa and then descend back to Barafu camp for a short rest before you proceed to Mweka Camp to wind up your day. (10,105 ft.)
Day 10: Mweka Gate to Moshi (5,512 ft.)
Today is the final day on the mountain; enjoy your breakfast before descending to Mweka gate passing through the rainforest zone. Upon arrival at the gate, we will complete park formalities and tipping ceremony with your support team where you will receive your well earned Certificate of Accomplishment. Our driver will then transfer you to Moshi where you can have lunch on your own or sponsor a celebratory lunch for your porters and your guide. This is always a lot of fun! (5,512 ft.)
Day 11: Check in at Chanya Lodge
We will check back in at Chanya Lodge for a much needed hot shower and/or swim in their large swimming pool! We’ll have dinner celebrating the highs and lows of our accomplishment before calling it a night. The lodge has a family heritage and history since the year of its establishment 1988. With the most recent refurbishments, they aspire to give guests the experience of true Tanzanian hospitality and nature’s charm combined with exceptional comforts.
Day 12: Last day in Tanzania – Flight home
Depending on your departure, enjoy a late check-out (not included) and a relaxing day around the pool, or maybe a massage to help your recovery from the long trek. Dine in the open air restaurant and enjoy the green garden. If you are up for more exploration, we could arrange for a day trip in the area exploring Moshi Town, a coffee plantation, or a breathtaking waterfall (not included).
