Day One – Roan High Knob to Ash Gap (5.5 miles)
We’ll start our adventure at Carver’s Gap (5,512 ft.) and hike uphill to Roan High Knob, the highest shelter on the entire Appalachian Trail! There’s some beautiful views from the top where the Cloudland Hotel once stood. We’ll stop for a quick lunch at the Roan High Knob shelter (6,186 ft.) then descend to Ash Gap where we’ll camp overnight.

Day Two – Ash Gap to Clyde Smith Shelter (6.5 Miles)
We’ll continue descending for about 3 miles to Hughes Gap, then we’ll head up to the top of Little Rock Knob with some beautiful views from the summit. We’ll then descend to the historic Clyde Smith Shelter area, complete with tent sites and water source where we’ll camp overnight.

Day Three – Clyde Smith Shelter to Iron Mountain Gap (6 Miles)
Today will be an up and down day literally, with some 6 ascents and descents. These are known as PUDS: Pointless Ups and Downs! Well go through Greasy Creek Gap, then on to Rock Pillar, finally descending to Iron Mountain Gap. We’ll head back to the Mountain Harbour Hostel for hot showers, then on to Cootie Browns for a well-deserved dinner before heading home.
